On May 12, 2001, sixteen-year-old Timeka Donyale "Meka" Pridgen vanished from her home in La Grange, North Carolina. Twenty-five years later, her disappearance remains one of those cases that lingers quietly in the background of public memory, known deeply by her family, whispered about in her community, but rarely given the space it deserves.
I want to give her that space today.

A Girl in Her Living Room

The last time anyone saw Timeka, she was sitting in the living room of her home on South Street, barefoot, relaxed, and comfortable in the place where she should have been safest. Her mother had fallen asleep waiting for her boyfriend to arrive, and when she woke up around midnight, Timeka was gone. Her shoes were still there. Her purse was still there. Her belongings were untouched, and the door was closed. There was no sign she had walked out on her own.

Who She Was

Timeka was artistic and sweet, a little shy, and a girl who loved to draw, a teenager with dreams she hadn't yet had time to fully shape. She was the kind of girl whose absence leaves a quiet ache, the kind that never fully goes away.

The Questions That Still Remain

In the early hours after she disappeared, assumptions were made that shaped the direction of her case, assumptions that, in hindsight, didn't match the facts and slowed the urgency her disappearance deserved. Over the years, investigators identified a person of interest: someone close, someone whose behavior raised questions, and someone who is no longer alive to answer them. But even so, the truth of what happened to Timeka has never been fully uncovered.

Why Her Story Matters

Timeka's disappearance is more than a moment frozen in 2001. It is a reminder of how easily a young girl's story can fade from public view, even when the circumstances are troubling, even when the questions are loud, and even when the answers feel close enough to touch. Her story deserves to be remembered not just as a mystery, but as a life interrupted.

Twenty-Five Years Later

Timeka would be in her forties today. She might have had a family, a career, and a life filled with the things she never got to experience. Instead, her family still waits, still wonders, and still carries the weight of a truth they have never been given.

Holding Space for Her

This post is simply that, holding space. For Timeka. For her mother. For the unanswered questions, and for the quiet ache that comes when a girl disappears, and the world moves on too quickly. There are other stories like hers, stories that deserve the same care, the same attention, and the same light. And in time, I'll be sharing more of them.

For now, we honor Timeka Donyale Pridgen, the girl who should have come home.
